Review: Axial SCX30 Jeep Wrangler & Ford Bronco
Truth be told, this review should have been released months ago. The problem is, I keep finding myself driving the SCX30 instead of writing about it. As you're reading this review, know that I could be running any of my three (yes…three) Axial SCX30s on my indoor crawling obstacles, but instead, I'm writing this love letter to the 1/30-scale micro crawler.
If you're not familiar, the SCX30 took the R/C crawling scene by storm late in 2025. Announced months earlier, it finally made its way to hobby store shelves in November and December. Featuring a hard plastic body that's dripping with visual detail, these truly tiny trucks not only look amazing, but their performance is eye-openingly good.
Shortly after my pre-ordered SCX30 Jeep Wrangler arrived on my workbench, I shared my thoughts in a first-look video. Since then, my appreciation and enthusiasm for the SCX30 has grown, and so too has my collection of these 1/30-scale dynamos. Without any more delay, here's my review of Axial's SCX30 Jeep Wrangler JLU and SCX30 Ford Bronco.
What's Included with the Axial SCX30:
- 1 Axial SCX30 Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco Micro Crawler
- 1 2.4GHz Radio Transmitter
- 1 7.4v, 750mah 2S LiPo battery
- 1 USB 2S LiPo Battery Charger
- 1 Instruction Manual
- Multiple Spare/Option Parts

The Body and Body Details:
Both the SCX30 Jeep Wrangler and the SCX30 Ford Bronco feature hard-plastic bodies with an assortment of details attached to them. The Bronco is the more subdued of the two, with its stock-looking roof rails and rear-mounted spare tire. The Jeep Wrangler, on the other hand, looks like it's ready to trek into the unknown with its roof racks, traction boards, storage cases, jerry cans, high-lift jack, spare rear tire, and more.
Between the two, the Jeep was initially the most attractive to me; however, I quickly decided to add a Bronco to my collection, as it offers its own unique set of customization and personalization options.
Speaking of customization, Axial has equipped the SCX30 Jeep Wrangler with an assortment of no-cost body mods. If you want to transform your trail-ready Wrangler into a more crawling-focused rig, you can remove the scale accessories and plug the mounting holes with body-colored plugs. You can even go a step further and swap out the wide fenders for a set of narrower, tube-style fenders that offer more articulation opportunities.
When it comes to mounting the body to the SCX30 chassis, Axial has devised a clever way that's both easy and body-post/clip-free. Using a rear tongue-style mount and twin "Lego hand"-style front clips, the bodies for both models are easy to remove and reattach, and they stay snug during most scale-accurate rollovers.
These two SCX30 models also feature LED-powered headlights and taillights, which are integrated into the chassis rather than the body. This lets you remove the body without worrying about wires.

The Electronics (Motor, Servos, Battery, Radio, and ESC):
Speaking of wires, let's dive into the electronics of the SCX30. With as compact a chassis as these rigs have, Axial has done an amazing job of maximizing what little space they have and arranging everything in an easy-to-use, yet tidy configuration. The 2-in-1 ESC and receiver is mounted on the right rock slider, while the battery is mounted on the left rock slider.
The motor and transmission are nestled toward the front of the SCX30 chassis, with the motor sitting perpendicular to the chassis, again, maximizing space. The motor in the SCX30 Jeep and Bronco is an 88T brushed unit, which is what you'll find in many of Axial's SCX24 models. While this motor in the SCX24 can be lacking at times, it's the perfect motor for the SCX30, offering plenty of power and torque to get your rig where it needs to go without any stress or performance impacts.
The Chassis:
I touched on how compact this chassis is early, but it's quite amazing how much Axial has managed to pack into this rig given the scale of this model. With a nylon/plastic frame, chassis links, and driveshaft, the SCX30 is incredibly light, especially with the body off. I managed to hit some impressive lines with just the bare chassis, given the lowered center of gravity.
But let's face it, you're not going to run this rig with the body off…unless you really want to. In stock configuration, this chassis performs incredibly well, but if you want to tune and tweak your SCX30 without buying upgrades, you can adjust the shock mounting positions on the front and rear of the chassis, giving you added flexibility when tuning your rig for improved crawling performance.

Performance:
Speaking of performance, both the SCX30 Jeep Wrangler and SCX30 Ford Bronco are amazing performers right out of the box. Until recently, I had driven these rigs exclusively indoors, on a selection of 3D-printed rock terrain. On the indoor setup, both the Jeep and Bronco handled various types of printed terrain.
From smooth and simple rock shapes to more advanced, jagged rockface terrain, both of these micro crawlers wasted no time working their way over the terrain. The Jeep seems to handle jagged terrain a bit better thanks to its knobbier tires; however, the Bronco is an equally capable rig.
This might be one of the most enjoyable R/C vehicles I've ever driven in stock configuration. The fact that anything can become a driving challenge is incredibly appealing, making the SCX30 an amazing go-to vehicle.
How Does it Stack Up to the Competition?
Where 1/24 and 1/18 R/C crawlers have several options to choose from, the micro crawler scene isn't as robust. In terms of raw, out-of-the-box performance, the SCX30 clearly stands on its own.
What's the Verdict?
I truly believe Axial has hit a home run with the SCX30. At $99.99, this may be one of the best budget-friendly radio-controlled vehicles I've ever driven, and it keeps getting better.
If the weather is forcing you to stay indoors, this vehicle is an excellent boredom buster. Set up some obstacles, Lego bricks, 3D-printed terrain, or anything else you can find, and see if you can conquer the path ahead. I've been using my SCX30s to prepare for the warmer weather and 1/10-crawling by better understanding what a rig can do in certain situations.
As I stated earlier in this review, I currently own three SCX30s, and I fully expect that number to climb as the year goes on. Whether you run it stock or outfit it with any of a growing number of upgrades, this is an insanely fun R/C crawler and an amazing rig for hobbyists of any age or skill level.
